Description
Summary:The main message of this work, commissioned by the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies, is that conventional economics thinking does not provide the framework to support sustainable development. In its place, application of the new economics, itself in a state of constant change, is needed to meet the needs of the Earth and its populations. The author prescribes a number of radical measures, including transition to people-centred economic systems, away from state-centred and business-centred systems, and transition from money-measured growth as a measure of success towards sustainability in terms of real-life social and environmental and economic variables. The book explains what the new economics is all about, its connection with sustainable development, and its key policy implications. Included are discussions of policies for taxation and public expenditure, changes in the monetary and financial system, and the new ways of measuring and accounting for economic activity. New concepts such as the citizen's income and demand reduction policies are developed and explained
