| Sumario: | In the context of the new individualistic historiography of the Renaissance, this study examines the rhetorical construction of the history of the conquest of Mexico. The author looks at the different perceptions of three selected chroniclers – Diáz del Castillo, de las Casas and Fernández de Oviedo – and at the resulting narrative presentation of the Conquista. Through a combination of their personal motivation, available sources, narrative techniques and understanding of history these authors created individual histories which are not a reflection of reality. Nonetheless the chroniclers competed to present themselves as reporters of the historical truth. The study analyses the rhetorical strategies with which they legitimised and authorised themselves as historians |
