Sumario: | Corpus Christi, Texas is being invaded. 14 million Ruby-throated hummingbirds fly into the town in a period of 48 hours. They are about to undertake the most remarkable journey, flying non-stop over 1000 kilometres across the hostile waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The trip will take 25 hours non-stop flying. They now weigh only 4 grams. That is not enough; they do not have enough fat to fuel the flight. They need to weigh 6 grams. The local people put up feeders where hundreds of glittering hummingbirds swarm, as they feed and put on weight, ready for this critical and dangerous stage of their migration. After binge feeding, the birds set off. The local coastguard and military can now track the hummingbirds as they fly across the sea by radar!. Hummingbirds are the key pollinators for 60% of the new World tropical plants. But because they are territorial, they are bad news for trees, as one tree makes a territory, so a hummingbird doesn’t need to travel and cross pollinate. So a tree in a hummingbird territory has only 3% chance of passing on its genes. A tree without a hummingbird, but visited by the moth is better off, with a 30% chance. But a tree that has moths protected by a resident hummingbird has a 90% chance of pollination. So both, moth and tree, benefit at the hummingbird’s expense. This film will reveal the remarkable lives of hummingbirds – some of nature’s most fabulous creatures. Everything about them is superlative and extreme: highest metabolism, fastest heart beat and most rapid wing beat. This remarkable specialisation has been driven by plants. Hummingbirds pollinate plants in extreme climates where insects are unable to fly. They are the glittering servants of the plants. |
