Sumario:This contribution is about a document discovered in the old paper depository of The Great Mosque of Damascus after the 1893 fire. These are the first few pages of a manuscript from between the IXth and the Xth century which belonged to the maliki library installed in the building’s prayer room. The work it is from, the Kitāb Hayr min zinatih, was written by 'Alī b. Ziyād (m. 183/799-800), Mālik b. Anas’ ifriqiya student and master of the first great figures of ifrīqiya Malekism. This paper, mentioned by medieval sources, was considered lost. This article offers the the edition, the translation and the commentary of this book opening pages along with its author’s biography. This fragment and the few extracts from other maliki authors that we could gather allow us to grasp the meaning and structure of the whole Kitāb Hayr min zinatih and to understand the role it had in the birth of the maliki tendency.
