Summary:This book provides a detailed exploration of the ways in which natural materials grow, and the relevance of these for engineering applications. Presenting the natural/man-made interface in depth and from various aspects, the text consists of a collection of research chapters all written by specialists in biomimetrics. These explore the differences in growth mechanisms for two key materials - wood and bone. Three chapters examine the processes by which trees grow, and possible applications to engineering materials, while a further two concentrate on the direct use of wood in engineering. There are also two contributions on the way in which bones grow, and their repair mechanism. A detailed exploration of the behaviour and use of two major naturally occurring solids, wood and bone, and their relevance for engineering applications. The chapters are written by international specialist in the field.
